It’s the spring of 1920, and 21-year-old Evelyn Whitley just boarded a train that will carry her 1000 miles north. Evie is mourning the recent death of her fiancé, and has elected to migrate from the deep south to Harlem. Without warning, her train is plunged back in time, and then forward, prompting an exploration of the ways she is connected to those before and after her. The narrative modulates across centuries, providing a panorama view of our shared story. Evelyn’s interior world is centered throughout the text. Her contemplations, recollections, and aspirations unfold into a vibrant tapestry. As Evelyn is journeying, she is journaling. This work imaginatively conceives the fate of the lyrics she has penned. It is a homage to black women throughout history who have taken steps of courage, paving the way for countless others.
The text is accompanied by an album of musical compositions, available on all major streaming platforms.
