SUSTAINABLE SYMPHONY

YOUNGARTS FELLOWSHIP 2024-25

Tyné was recently selected for the 2024-25 YoungArts Fellowship. Her Sustainable Symphony project focuses on constructing musical instruments using sustainable methods and materials, specifically reclaimed wood from decommissioned acoustic pianos. Showcased in a culminating performance (spring 2025), the constructed instruments will highlight Tyné’s expansive practice and explore creative solutions to problems of accessibility, functionality, cost, and environmental sustainability. Her ongoing doctoral research examines the evolution of recording technologies; sounds emitted from damaged or neglected musical objects; throwaway culture and electronic waste; and optimizing the acoustic properties of diverse materials.

The film explores the materials used traditionally in musical instrument construction and the current challenges surrounding deforestation, waste, and a general lack of sustainability across the industry. From there, it highlights solutions being implemented by makers. Footage of Tynés build process is included, accompanied by her reflections. Live studio performances of original compositions featuring her instruments are interspersed.

  2. Showcase of 3 eco-instruments constructed by Tyné.
